5 Mistakes to Avoid at Hotel Checkout

5 Mistakes to Avoid at Hotel Checkout

You may take checking out of a hotel as a simple process, but it can sometimes be a difficult time for even savvy travelers. Whether you have chosen family accommodation and Villas in Bali, or a beach resort to stay with friends, avoid making the following mistakes at hotel checkout to save yourself time and money and stay relaxed.

Failing to Double-Check Your Bill

Along with many other reasons, hotels are infamous for tacking on hidden charges. Though some are unavoidable, you may want to take a deep look at anything that seems problematic on your bill, like charges for drinks and snacks when you didn’t step in the minibar, or a lunch in the hotel restaurant that was charged to some other room number. Make sure to let the management know about these charges and get an updated, correct copy of the receipt before you leave.

Leaving Your Possessions Behind

On the night before you leave, pack as much as you can when you are not stressed for the time being. Pack your passports and jewelry on a priority basis. Before leaving your room, just give one last peek under the bed or table for things that may have fallen, open up the safe, pull the shower curtain, and check all the electrical outlets.

Forgetting to Tip the Housekeeper

Many people forget to recognize the hardworking housekeeping staff in a rush. If there are no small bills, you can get the change at the front desk. Consider leaving around $3 to $5 for each night of your stay, depending on local norms of tipping and the amount of your mess they have cleaned.

Not Allowing Enough Time

Ideally, you would get your room, hand the room key at the front desk, and complete the checkout process in a minute or two. Don’t rely on that, especially if you are staying a hotel that caters to large conventions and tour groups. These hotels have long lines at the front desk during the usual checkout times. If you have a train or plane to catch, allow yourself a lot of time to check out, just in case.

Overstaying Your Welcome

Make sure to know your schedules checkout time, so you can leave when you are supposed to and the housekeepers can get the time to clean the room for the next guest. Make sure to plan accordingly. If you need some extra time, call the front desk in advance so you can see if they can easily accommodate you. If you stay in the room beyond the scheduled checkout, you will be disrupting the housekeeping routine and can also be charged with extra fees.

Make to avoid making these mistakes to keep situations under control for yourself as well as the hotel staff and other guests.
